3 races were delivered on Friday off the Hill Head shore, in dismal weather conditions and a shifty 6 – 12 knots. Team Russia, regular UK fleet competitors, sailed by Oleg Zherrebtsov and Rodion Luka made a strong start on day 1, notching up a 2, 1, 1. Jerry Hill’s Sportsboatworld.com (ex 3 Sad Old Blokes) had a similarly encouraging opening day, finishing with 3, 2, 2 on the results sheet.

Day 2 dawned with brighter conditions and the Race Officer did an excellent job of getting 3 races away in a timely fashion. Joe Llewellyn, Nigel Wakefield and Jerry Vigus on board Henri Lloyd/Forelle Estates put the previous day’s recall behind them and made their presence known to overnight leaders Team Russia. Although Henri Lloyd/Forelle Estates were winners of day 2, Team Russia held onto their overall lead by a single point but didn’t manage to take a single race result from Llewellyn, Wakefield and Vigus.

The “tussle at the top” continued on Day 3. Team Russia and Henri Lloyd Forelle Estates took a first and a second each in the final 2 races of the series leaving Team Russia the overall winners with just eleven points after 8 races. Jerry Hill, Sportsboatworld.com, finished in third place rounding off the podium positions. These 3 boats took all of the first place positions over the 3 day event!

The SB20 class welcomed Mark Irons, Alan Harris and Nicky Flook to the fleet for in their first year in the class. This weekend was the 8th edition of the Vice Admirals Cup. The SB20 class hope to be invited to return for the 9th edition in 2013 following the great race management and warm welcome of the staff and members at the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club.

Racing in the SB20 Zhik Solent Series continues on 2nd/3rd June at the Royal Southern Yacht Club in Hamble as part of the Clubs 175 year anniversary celebrations.

The UK SB20 fleet will be competing under their new guise for the first time at the Vice Admirals Cup, hosted by the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club in Cowes from Friday 18th to Sunday 20th May. 

Under the new 2012 rules, the SB20 class are allowed GPS based instruments, including smart start-line technology.

Products now class legal include the Velocitek ProStart, Rockbox and Novasail products.

In association with Sportsboat World, long time 49er sailor and coach, Mark Asquith, who represents Velocitek in the UK, will be on hand in a rib for the Friday racing, offering coaching tips and advice. Ashore after the racing Mark will conduct a debrief on the days racing and also offer tips and advice on how to best use the Velocitek ProStart.

The SB20 and the exciting new branding, I am sure will create a wave of enthusiasm for what is after all, by a long way the best one design keel boat racing around.

What we need is a flow of new boats, increasing numbers and attracting new recruits. This will also release boats into the second hand market. To achieve this we need to balance the preservation of a strict one design ethos, with some equipment upgrades that make buying a new boat worthwhile. I believe the team have secured this and fully support the approach taken.

Add into the mix the cheaper sails, better build quality, more reliable after sales service and enhanced marketing and we have a great future.

Long live the SB20! Now lets go racing!

Boats came from as far as Cornwall and Scotland, plus newcomers from Southwold and The Hamble. Friday of the Easter weekend brought chilly force 3-4 breezes and the challenge to identify the channel of wind down the Water in order to keep planing . The Hull boys in Moon Monkey showed their skill with two 1sts and a 2nd. That day proved to a number of crews that sail-handling skills had rusted over winter!

David Atkinson in Kit Off (with M Farmer and Mikey Matthews) won the last race that day, and for the next 2 days he competed with his own Dragon crewman(!) John Outhwaite in Baloo (with Doug Paton and Carl Outhwaite) to displace the Hull boys. In force 2-3 winds it was another challenge for everyone: this time to find the pressure under the grey cloudy sky.

Throughout the weekend there was close racing and frequent changes in position, these becoming more significant with the last 4 races. In these the top-3 also carded mid-fleet results together with a win each, though Ross Lang (with Ally Paton and Dan Challis) took the last race of the Inland Championship. But the best overall was Moon Monkey with the Hull boys.

The Ultimate Race of the weekend was a quick, one-lap time trial, starting at any point within a time window. Those who went late in the window took advantage of the break in the clouds which gave them an exhilarating ride down. The popular Scottish winner by 18 seconds was Craig Latimer in The Wildebeest, with crew Ross Watson and Gillian Semple.

The Champions received the Inland Trophy together with sunglasses from SB3 Class sponsors Bolle.

The class have also extended an invite to all competitors due to race at the Scottish Nationals to join the class at the Savills Kip Regatta on 19th/20 May for what is hoped to be a great warm-up regatta for the fleet.

In other news the Scottish SB3 Fleet is pleased to announce that Bolle (the international eyewear manufacturer) will be providing support to the class during BDSS:

The 2012 Scottish SB3 season starts on 6th April with the SB3 Inlands in Rutland which is followed by the Sunbird Regatta at Ardrossan the following weekend. This is a fantastic early season training & racing event.

Sunday and Wednesday Local ‘East Patch’ racing will also be available from 15th & 21st April respectively. Everyone who has previously attended the Inland Championships has always had a brilliant time! The Club are very welcoming and always lay on a good social as well as great racing.

The Inland Championship is always held over the Easter Weekend (6 – 8 April 2012). The format of racing provides enough time for entrants to arrive at the Club, rig and launch on Good Friday and depart on Easter Sunday to be home in time for Easter Eggs with the family and friends.

The Warsash Marine Trophy will be awarded at the event Prize Giving on Easter Sunday, along with the a fantastic selection of prizes from Bolle.

So, now all you have to do is enter!

With a core fleet of 6 SB3’s enjoying competitive racing for the last 2 years in the wonderful Colne & Blackwater estuary location we are now looking to step up to the next level by attracting interested owners and crews to establish a larger and sustainable racing fleet.

There is a thriving racing community at Brightlingsea from both the Colne Yacht Club (cruisers and sport boats) and Brightlingsea Sailing Club (racing dinghies & catamarans) and Brightlingsea has been host to many national and world class events for various classes. The use of both fixed line and committee boat starts enables a combination of ‘round the cans’ and ‘windward/leeward’ courses to suit all weathers and tastes and get the best out of these exciting and exhilarating boats.

SB3’s are stored securely in the ‘Park & Ride’ boat park (mast up) and launched by the town jetty using tractors operated by the ‘Park & Ride’ team. This efficient system is both fast and affordable and allows the boats to be well kept and sailed to their optimum intended performance.

A full race programme is planned for the 2012 season with a mixture of round the cans and windward/leeward courses, from April to October, with social events. The programme is designed to recognise the fact that many crews have other weekend family and sporting commitments so it affords the flexibility to commit to sections of the programme or, for the really enthusiastic, the whole series. For those travelling any distance where possible early starts will be avoided.

Racing will take place over 3 days, Friday 18th, Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th May. 3 races are scheduled for Friday and Saturday with just two on Sunday allowing time for the prize giving and everyone to return to their home ports.

The Vice Admirals Cup is the first of a number of Laser SB3 events that will take place in the Solent during 2012. Shortly after the V.A.C. the Laser SB3 fleet will be taking part in the Royal Southern Yacht Club’s 175 Year Anniversary Regatta on 2nd and 3rd June before making the trip to the eastern Solent for the annual Seaview Yacht Club gathering of the class.

2012 is shaping up to be a really exciting year for the class. The National Championships will be hosted in mid June at Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy, just ahead of the closure of the venue for the Olympic Games. Cowes Week will no doubt be as popular as ever and in the third week of September, the European fleet will gather for their Championships at Medemblik, Netherlands where approximately 70 boats are expected to compete for the European Championship title.

Hamilton Island, Queensland, Australia will host the 2012 Laser SB3 World Championships from 12th – 20th December. Highly subsidised shipping will encourage a good turn out of European entries for the fifth World Championships of the class in one of the world’s “sailing paradises”.
